Days of the Week

DAYS OF THE WEEK IN JAPANESE:

  • 日曜日 - Sunday (See )
  • 月曜日 - Monday (See )
  • 火曜日 - Tuesday (See )
  • 水曜日 - Wednesday (See )
  • 木曜日 - Thursday (See )
  • 金曜日 - Friday (See )
  • 土曜日 - Saturday (See )

NOTE: All of the days have a 曜日.

When listing a series of days ( Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday... ) Japanese usually drops the 曜日 ( 月, 火, 水 getsu, ka, sui... )

THE KANJI - each kanji has several pronunciations and sometimes several meanings. Let's look at the meanings of the Days of the Week kanji:

  • nichi, hi, jitsu [day, sun]
    EXAMPLES: 朝日 asa hi - morning sun; 本日 hon jitsu -today (used in formal occasions)
  • getsu, gatsu, tsuki [month, moon]
    EXAMPLES: 来月 rai getsu - next month; 一月 ichi gatsu - January (lit. first month)
  • ka, hi, bi [fire]
    EXAMPLES: 火事 kaji - a fire; 花火 hanabi - fireworks
  • sui, mizu [water]
    EXAMPLES: 水 mizu - water
  • moku, boku, ki [tree, wood]
    EXAMPLES: 木 ki - a tree
  • kin, kane [gold, money]
    EXAMPLES: お金 okane - money
  • do, to, tsuchi [earth, soil]
    EXAMPLES: 土地 tochi - the ground, land
