Not corny. Enjoy your studies. I find that using the alphabet also helps too. Like when you can, sit down and write sentences.

Hiragana isn't too difficult to learn. I think coming up with silly mnemonics is a great way to remember the characters at first. Later, you will automatically drop the mnemonic and just say the sound.
