hey...wait...isn't the number nine "kyu" ? someone clarify...( by the way, I'm a complete beginner...hence the question..)

く(Ku) and

く(Ku) and きゅう(Kyuu) both mean 9. In certain instances you use one instead of the other. Just like しち(Shichi) and なな(Nana) mean 7.
