Solitude? Is this an american pronounciation because in britain we say it like (SOber) maybe americans say (SAlly) ?
American Think "sa" as in

Not only are they spelt the same but they sound the same as well. ^^

I can see no pattern to the S's. I can't really see one for the other subsets either.
If these patterns were shown and discussed, I believe it would help immensely.
And I can see the wheelchair :D .

I think the pattern is that its あ, い, う, え, お every time with a consonant now preceding them.
So the pattern with the S's being さ(sa), し(si), す(su), せ(se), そ(so)
