Should/Must はず

You should know はず. It is easy and useful, therefore you have no excuse :)

Hazu shows an expectation that something should happen. In other words, you are pretty sure something is true. Let`s see how it works...

To add はず to any adjective just add it...
そのかばんは、高いはずです。
sono kaban wa, takai hazu desu.
That bag must be expensive.
[It is expected to be expensive]

Just add it to the simple form of any verb
あなたは、ゴジラを知っているはずです。
anata wa, gojira o shitteiru hazu desu.
You should/must know Godzilla.

Shouldn't

What about should not...?

Study your verb conjugations~

What abouttt.. "You should

What abouttt..

"You should not drink alcohol"

君はアルコールがはずじゃない飲まみません。

Is it correct? x.x 6 years of my studying is down the drain really.

Not that way.

はず expresses an expectation, no a prescription.

Also, it's placed after the verb about which there is an expectation.

仕事中だから、君は酒を飲まないはずです。
Since it's during work, you shouldn't be drinking. (I presume you won't be drinking.)

仕事中、酒を飲まないほうがいいです。During work, you shouldn't drink. (Drinking at work is bad, so its better if you don't.)

仕事中、酒を飲まないべきです。 During work, you shouldn't drink. (I tell you, you shouldn't drink during work.)

仕事中、飲んではいけません。During work, don't drink. (That's the rules.)

君はアルコールがは

君はアルコールがはずじゃない飲まみます ****

This is still incorrect, I'm

This is still incorrect, I'm sorry to say.

君はアルコールを飲まないはずです = "You shouldn't drink alcohol."

Expectation, not prescription.

But "You shouldn't drink alcohol" sounds like a recommendation, which isn't what はず conveys. See my other replay above.

Also..

My dictionary says beki for should

はず (Hazu) is usually

はず (Hazu) is usually strictly used as "should" like your dictionary says. "Must" is usually done with verb conjugation: 食べなければなりません。= (I) must eat.

Stem form + なければなりません (Nakerebanarimasen)。

Of course I usually use plain form なくちゃ (Nakucha) =]

I meant to type "はず

I meant to type "はず (hazu) and べき(beki)" and I probably shouldn't have said "strictly"
