It’s a cross in the ground.

On: ド; ト
Kun: つち
Meaning: earth; ground; soil

Don’t confuse this with “gentleman” 士. The earth is wider than the cross here.

Stroke Order:

Examples:
粘土 nen do – clay
土地 to chi – ground; area; soil
土曜日 do you bi – Saturday

Example Sentence:
土地を売る。
tochi o uru.
To sell land.
