It is a number “1” on its side. Draw the single stroke from left to right.

Examples:

お父さん o tou san – a father

父の日 chichi no hi – Father’s Day

Example Sentence:

仕事が終わったら、お父さんはテレビの前でごろごろします。

shigoto ga owattara, otousan wa terebi no mae de gorogoro shimasu.

After work, dad just loafs around in front of the TV.

[The honorific “o” is usually added to tousan.]
