What’s the Difference?

If you’ve been learning Japanese for a while, you’ve probably come across 気持(きも) and 気分(きぶん)

They both deal with how you feel, but the nuance is quite different.

Let’s break it down so you’ll never mix them up again!

Feelings or Sensations

気持(きも) refers to the physical or emotional sensations you experience in a specific moment. It’s about what your body or senses directly feel.

Think of it like this: 気持(きも) is your reaction to something pleasant or unpleasant. For example:

  • Sinking into a hot bath? → 気持(きも)ちがいい ("It feels so good!")
  • A soft blanket on a cold day?
  • But see mold on the bread just before you take a bite?

Example Sentences:

Slipping into a bath on a cold day feels so good.

Lying before an exam just feels wrong.

Overall Mood or State of Mind

気分(きぶん), on the other hand, is about your general emotional state or mood at a given time. It’s less about immediate physical sensations and more about your mental/emotional outlook.

Imagine waking up on a sunny day with no obligations. You might think:今日(きょう)気分(きぶん)がいい ("I’m in a good mood today!")

Or maybe it’s a rainy Monday morning, and you haven’t had coffee yet:今日(きょう)気分(きぶん)(わる) ("I’m feeling down today.")

Example Sentences:

I’m in a good mood because I’m going on a trip.

That movie put me in a bad mood.

How to Remember the Difference:

Here’s a simple trick:

Immediate feelings or sensations. Think about how your body reacts!
Overall mood. It’s more abstract and deals with your mental state.

Quick Comparisons:

The weather feels refreshing!
I’m in a great mood today!

That being said, there are times the two overlap. For example, when you are sick, you can say 気分(きぶん)(わる) or 気持(きも)ちが(わる)You just feel bad inside and out.

Practice Time!

Let’s test your understanding. Which phrase fits better?

  1. You’re enjoying a soft massage.
  2. You’re frustrated because you spilled your coffee.
  3. You feel great after exercising.
