Etymology: 

Think of polishing or grinding the bark off two trees 木 with a stone 石 in a cave 广.

  • 歯磨(はみが)き brushing one's teeth
  • 歯磨(はみが)き粉(こ) toothpaste
  • 切磋琢磨(せっさたくま) diligent application (to work or study); improving oneself through hard studying/work; mutual encouragement for both to improve
  • 靴磨(くつみが)き shoeshine; shoe polishing
