JLPT N5 Grammar: Adjectives

Adjectives

 ABOUT:

■ In Japanese, there are two types of adjectives:
い adjectives and な adjectives. The い adjectives are easy to recognize because they end with い.
■ な adjectives are everything else. There are a few なadjectives that end in い like きれい (pretty) and
きらい (dislike). Memorize those two exceptions.

■ Examples: い adjectives

暑(あつ)い

hot

高(たか)い

expensive; high

おいしい

delicious

■ Examples: な adjectives [Add the な before nouns]

静(しず)か

quiet

簡単(かんたん)

easy

親切(しんせつ)

kind

Adjectives are their very best when modifying nouns. Let's see how to do that with い and な adjectives.
■ Examples with Nouns: い adjectives [Simply add a noun]

暑(あつ)い日(ひ)

a hot day

高(たか)いビル)

a high building

おいしいすし)

delicious sushi

■ Examples with Nouns: な adjectives [Add the な before nouns]

静(しず)かなところ)

a quiet place

簡単(かんたん)なテスト)

an easy test

親切(しんせつ)な人(ひと))

a kind person

Adjectives in Japanese can turn into adverbs (used to modify verbs instead of nouns) by changing the い to く for い adjectives and changing the な to に for な adjectives.

■ Adverbial Examples: い adjectives [drop い and add く before the verb]

暑(あつ)くなります)

will become hot

高(たか)くなります)

became higher (price or height)

おいしくします))

to make (something) delicious

■ Examples: な adjectives [drop the な and add に]

静(しず)かに話(はな)します)

quietly speak

簡単(かんたん)にできました)

easily done

親切(しんせつ)に言(い)いました))

speaking kindly

For the non-past tense, that is about it. Now, let's look at how to use adjectives in the past and negatively.

  • Real easy to understand comments and explanations. (Mind, I’ve ploughed through a few that are not!). Thanks a lot for all of this. Will be working through these between now and December. 🙂 Slight criticism: Furigana is really tiny on the website. I haven’t started the download Grammar book yet.
