JLPT N5 Grammar: どのぐらい dono gurai – about how long / much


 ABOUT: 

どのぐらい  and どのくらい are interchangeable and are used to ask about the degree or extent of something. It translates to "About how long?" "About how far?" or "About how much?" depending on the context.

This is made up of:

  • どの (which or what): This is a question word that refers to a selection or identification out of a group or range.
  • ぐらい/くらい (about): This indicates an approximation or estimate.


 Examples:

東京(とうきょう)京都(きょうと)距離(きょり)は、どのくらいありますか?
