JLPT N5 Grammar: なにも・だれも・どこにも nanimo / daremo / dokonimo – nothing; no one; nowhere

Sometimes there are nice shortcuts with Japanese. Let's learn what happens to a question word when you add a も.

なにも・だれも・どこにも

 ABOUT: 

The も attached to these question words means "none".

何(なに)
what

何(なに)も

nothing; not any
(followed by negative verb)

誰(だれ)
who

誰(だれ)も
everyone; anyone

-or- no-one (followed by negative verb)

どこ
where

どこにも
nowhere
(followed by negative verb)

いつ
when

いつも
always
-or- never (followed by a positive or negative verb)


 Examples:

■ 私(わたし)は、何(なに)も持(も)っていません。 (I) don't have anything.

■ 誰(だれ)も私の意見(いけん)を聞(き)きたくないです。 No one wants to hear my opinion.

■ かぎは、どこにもありませんでした。 The keys were nowhere.

■ あの子(こ)は、いつもゲームをしています。 That kid is always playing (video) games.
