JLPT N4 Grammar: Toiu という Such a; called

という Such a

called; named; meaning; such as; that; there is such a thing as

Add after the noun or phrase it quotes.

Used to name, define, or explain some noun or phrase. 


例文(れいぶん) EXAMPLE SENTENCE

「タマ」という(ねこ)()っています。

Tama – such a – cat – keeping
I have a cat called Tama.

COMMENTS

■  It is sometimes written with the kanji: と()う which is made of the quotation marker と and ()う (to speak). This can be 「てっいう」 in casual conversation.
