JLPT N4 Grammar: ~っぱなし Keep …ing

~っぱなし

Meaning: 1) left as is; unchanged  2) continue an action
JLPT Level: N4

Examples

一晩中(ひとばんじゅう)、ラジオをつけっぱなしだった。

all night long — radio — (direct object) — left on — was
The radio was left on all night long.

ふられたあと、彼女(かのじょ)()っぱなしだった。

dumped — after — she — (topic marker) — cry — continued — did
After being dumped, she cried and cried.

Notes: This is an example of continuing an action.

Comments

Add to the stem of the ます form of any verb.

The kanji is (はな)し from (はな)す, which means to “set free.”
